2011-12 ANNUAL COLLEGIATE UNDERGRADUATE WRITING
COMPETITION
The Virginia Outdoor Writers Association, Inc. (VOWA) is proud to again sponsor a Collegiate
Undergraduate Writing Contest. The objective is to encourage young adults to write about their outdoor
experiences and interests in wildlife or natural history.
The competition is open to any undergraduate student enrolled at a Virginia college or university, including
two-year community colleges, public, and private post-secondary institutions. The theme for the contest is to
write about a memorable outdoor experience or special interest. Each writer is to title his/her own entry.
The winners will be introduced at the association's annual meeting in the spring of 2012. Winning entries
will be published on the association's web site. The first place-winning essay will be considered for publication
in Virginia Wildlife Magazine and attempts will be made to get all winners published in a number of weekly and
daily publications throughout Virginia.
Cash awards of $250 for first place and $150 for second place will be presented.

Phil Johnson, Regional Coordinator with Project Healing Waters, ties flies at the October 13, 2010, gathering of wounded veterans and others. Project Healing Waters teaches these wounded veterans about fly tying and fishing as a way of passing some of the long, boring hours they spend in therapy and recuperation from battle scars.
