"The Smartest Fish in America" - Bill Rooney
It's disheartening to face up to the realization that you're dumber than a perch. But there it was: We were in a fishing camp in Ontario, had exhausted our coolers, and the 'gamefish glamorpusses' had gone on a hunger strike. But no problem, the lake was loaded with yellow-perch. Perch are piscatorial 'nuckledraggers' that'll take a live worm anytime. Later, as my cronies and I ate our dinner of peanut butter, hot peppers, and beer, we had time to reflect on the intellectual prowess of human's water bound legions.

"Possessing the Helm" - Jim Crosby
We were motoring up the Chesapeake Bay. I had the helm of the 42-foot, sport fisherman. The water was lumpy and required a great effort at the wheel.

"Boat For Good Health" - Jim Crosby
Most people really get excited when you tell them that just being aboard a boat will tone their muscles and burn excess calories. Being on a boat is like walking or sitting on a balance beam. It requires constant muscle movement to counter the motion of the boat and maintain your equilibrium. It can also be compared to sitting in a rocking chair with the major difference being the changing scenery as you move around on the water. Everyone knows the health benefits of the old rocking chair.

"Harbingers of Spring" - Spike Knuth
According to the calendar, spring begins around March 21 each year, the time of the vernal equinox. Usually we equate spring to warming weather. However, in the world of birds, the movements and actions of a number of species tips us off to the fact that spring is coming no matter what the weather looks like.

"Mountain Feists" - Dean Fosdick
For well over a decade, John Berry has been silent partner to ``Katie" and ``Midge''_ two Mountain Feists trained to run circles around him while he moves slowly through the woods, stalking squirrels. Berry is a game warden in northern Virginia and a die-hard squirrel hunter. More than that, he's passionate about working with treeing dogs while hunting squirrels.
The diminutive Mountain Feists certainly qualify.

"Trees Come Up Faster At Night" - Nancy Sorrells
The trees come up mighty fast when the only means of seeing them is a 10-watt light mounted on your handlebars. They seem to come up even faster when your first-ever look at the trail (and I use that word lightly) is from the glow of that lamp.
